This religious institute, officially called the Congregation of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ, was founded in Italy in 1720 by Paolo Francesco Danai (St. Paul of the Cross, 1694-1775). Their rule and constitutions were approved by Benedict XIV in 1741 and 1746. William Ignatius Stuhlmueller was born in Hamilton, Ohio on April 2, 1923. A a member of the Passionist community beginning in 1943, he received his Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Catholic University of America in 1952, and a Doctorate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in 1968.
